Quick answer: Do not book until your visa is granted. Most backpackers land between September and November to catch the summer hiring season, or in February to March when hostels empty out and rents drop. Sydney and Melbourne are the easiest cities to start in; Brisbane is cheaper; Perth suits a Western Australia plan. Use a fare search tool to compare routes via Asia or the Middle East, and be flexible by a day or two — it often saves more than any deal.
Australian seasons, upside down
Australia’s seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere:
| Season | Months | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | December – February | Peak tourism, peak hospitality hiring, hot; hostels full over Christmas |
| Autumn | March – May | Mild, cheaper, rents ease; good for city job hunting |
| Winter | June – August | Cool in the south, dry season and busy in the north (Queensland, NT) |
| Spring | September – November | Businesses hire for summer; best all-round arrival window |
The north (Cairns, Darwin, Broome) runs on wet and dry seasons instead. Dry season (roughly May to October) is peak; the wet is humid, stormy and quieter.
When to arrive
September to November is the sweet spot for most people. Cafés, bars and tour operators are staffing up for summer, the weather is good everywhere, and you have time to settle before the Christmas rush. If you plan to work in hospitality, book your RSA course for your first week so you can apply immediately.
February to March is the quiet alternative. Backpackers who arrived for summer are leaving, rooms open up, and employers who lost staff need replacements.
Avoid landing in the week before Christmas. Hostels sell out, prices double, and no one is hiring until mid-January.
If your plan is farm work first, start with the harvest calendar for your target region — our 88 days guide explains how to find it.
Which city to land in
- Sydney — biggest job market, most hostels, most expensive rent. CBD College delivers RSA, RCG and White Card here.
- Melbourne — café capital, strong hospitality and events work, slightly cheaper than Sydney, cold winters.
- Brisbane — cheaper, warm, gateway to the east coast and to Queensland farm regions.
- Perth — isolated but well paid, with mining-adjacent and WA farm work. Good if you want fewer backpackers competing for jobs.
- Adelaide — small, cheap, close to South Australian vineyards and fruit regions.
All five cities have CBD College campuses, so wherever you land you can do a White Card or RSA course in a day.
You do not have to stay where you land. Domestic flights and buses are covered in getting around Australia.
Finding cheap flights
From Europe, most fares route through the Middle East (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi) or Asia (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taipei). From Latin America, common routes go via Santiago (the direct Santiago–Sydney and Santiago–Melbourne flights), via the USA, or via the Middle East. From Taiwan and Hong Kong there are direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
What works:
- Search a whole month, not one date. Shifting by two days can change the price a lot.
- Compare arrival cities. Flying into Melbourne instead of Sydney, or Perth from Asia, can be cheaper.
- Consider a stopover. A few days in Singapore or Bangkok can cost less than a direct fare and breaks a very long trip.
- Check baggage rules. A cheap fare with 20 kg included beats a cheaper fare that charges for bags. Our packing list is built around one 20 kg bag.
- One-way vs return. One-way fares to Australia are often reasonable, and many backpackers do not know when or where they will leave from. Keep enough money to buy a ticket home in case Home Affairs asks.
We use Skyscanner to compare and then book directly with the airline where the price is the same, which makes changes easier.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to arrive in Australia on a working holiday?
For city hospitality jobs, arriving in September to November lines you up with the summer hiring season. If you want farm work first, aim for the harvest calendar in your chosen region. Avoid landing in the two weeks around Christmas when hostels are full and businesses slow down.
Which city should I fly into?
Sydney and Melbourne have the most jobs and hostels and are the easiest first landing. Brisbane is cheaper and closer to the east coast trail. Perth suits people planning Western Australia farm work. All five major cities have CBD College campuses for RSA and White Card courses.
Do I need a return ticket?
Home Affairs may ask for evidence that you can afford to leave Australia, which can be a return or onward ticket or enough money to buy one. Many backpackers fly one way and show funds instead. Check Home Affairs.
How far in advance should I book?
Wait for your visa grant, then book. Fares are generally cheapest two to four months out, and prices for December and January climb early.
