First aid course in Australia (HLTAID011): who needs it and how to get it (2026)

The HLTAID011 first aid certificate: which employers require it, how the one-day course works, CPR refreshers, and how to book with CBD College.

Quick answer: HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the certificate Australian employers mean when they say “first aid”. It is a one-day course that includes CPR. Childcare, sport and recreation, construction supervision and many outdoor jobs require it; hospitality and retail treat it as a bonus. Industry practice is to refresh CPR yearly and the full certificate every three years. CBD College (RTO 91399), which is owned by the same people as KoalaGuide and pays KoalaGuide a commission on bookings made through our links, runs it in five cities.

Not every backpacker needs a first aid certificate. But if you are chasing childcare, au pair, sports coaching, outdoor education or a supervisor role on site, it is not optional, and in every other job it makes you the person the manager wants on the roster.

The certificate explained

The national unit is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. It includes the CPR unit HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, so you get both on one statement of attainment. The course covers:

  • DRSABCD: the Australian first aid action plan
  • CPR on adults, children and infants, using manikins
  • using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • choking, bleeding, burns, fractures, sprains
  • anaphylaxis and adrenaline auto-injectors
  • asthma, seizures, shock, snake and spider bites, heat stroke
  • record-keeping and your legal responsibilities

Expect a mix of online pre-learning, a practical day and a short assessment.

Who is asked to have it

SectorHow it is treated
Childcare and early learningRequired. Usually needs the extra education and care unit as well (HLTAID012).
Au pair and nanny workFamilies almost always ask for it.
Sport, recreation, outdoor education, swimming poolsRequired or strongly expected.
Construction supervisors and leading handsRequired on most sites; labourers are not usually required but it helps.
Farm and station workNot required, but very valued in remote areas.
Hospitality and retailBonus. Venues need designated first aiders on shift.
Tour guides and hostel staffExpected.

Check job ads in your sector before booking; if a role needs the childcare-specific unit, book that version so you do not pay twice.

How the day runs

Most providers run HLTAID011 as one face-to-face day, sometimes with online theory to complete beforehand. You will spend a lot of the day on the floor with manikins, so wear something comfortable. You need photo ID and your USI. The certificate is usually issued within a few days.

CPR refreshers

CPR skills fade. Australian industry guidance recommends refreshing CPR every twelve months and the full first aid unit every three years. A CPR refresher (HLTAID009 on its own) is a short session, often a couple of hours. Employers in childcare and sport are strict about this, so put a reminder in your phone.

First aid as a job advantage

Two backpackers apply for a bar job. One has an RSA. The other has an RSA and a current first aid certificate. Venues need trained first aiders on every shift, so the second candidate is easier to roster. The same logic applies on farms, in hostels and on tour buses. It is a small cost for a certificate that follows you around the country and, frankly, might save someone’s life at the beach.

Frequently asked questions

Which first aid certificate do Australian employers ask for?

The standard is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, which includes CPR (HLTAID009). Childcare roles usually need an additional unit covering anaphylaxis and asthma in an education and care setting.

How long is a first aid certificate valid?

Industry guidance recommends renewing the full first aid certificate every three years and refreshing CPR every twelve months. Employers and some state regulations may set their own requirements.

Do I need first aid for a hospitality job?

It is not a legal requirement for most hospitality roles, but venues need a certain number of first aiders on shift, so holding one makes you more useful and easier to roster.

Is an Australian first aid certificate recognised overseas?

It is widely respected but not automatically recognised. Many countries have their own standards. Treat it as an Australian workplace certificate and a good skill for life.
